TERMINOLOGY

Although Epic Duels is a simple game to learn and play, there are many significant elements to its design and use. A zeitgeist has developed among players connected by the Internet that helps designate these features. This small list of terms can help you decode and communicate with other players on the net, and also provide some clarity during actual game play.

Basic Combat Cards: These cards have a full picture of the dueling character and have both an attack and defense value. They’re the foundation in defining the fighting styles of each of the fighters (see “deck colors”). Major characters have 10 of these cards and minors have 9.

Power Combat Cards: These cards represent exceptional attack and defending powers of your character that further individualize the deck. These attack and defend cards usually (but not always) are higher than basic combat cards, and include a game text that further effects game play.

Special Cards: Special cards represent each characters special powers or abilities. These cards cannot be blocked or cancelled by opponents.

"HP" - "Hit Points" or "Health Points": The amount of damage a character can take before being killed or defeated.

Direct Damage: Undefendable damage that is dealt by Special Cards. Force Push, Thermal Detonator, Whirlwind Attack, and Wrath are all examples of cards that deal direct damage.

Major Character: Simply refers to the main character that you’re playing. The Major character can survive the destruction of their helping minor characters. Yoda, Han and Darth Maul are major characters.

Minor Characters: The character(s) that assist your major character. In standard play, these characters are instantly destroyed if your major character is defeated. There are two kinds of minor characters:

  • Non-Unique Minors: This refers to generic characters, always in pairs. These character share a pool of basic combat cards. Clone Troopers, Super Battle Droids and Royal Guards are non-unique minors.

  • Persona or Unique Minors: These minors represent a singular character from the films. Major characters are only paired with one persona minor. These minors can utilize special and power combat cards. Chewbacca, Zam and Padme are persona minors.

Melee Characters: Characters that must be adjacent to opponents to attack, usually using light sabers.

Shooters or Ranged Characters: Characters that can attack from a distance using long-range weapons.

“Line of Sight”: The paths in which a Shooter can attack opponents. For chess players, it’s the same way a Queen can move.

Deck “Colors”

In order to instill each deck with specific strengths and weaknesses, the designers of the game created 5 different sets of basic combat cards, providing different foundations for different kinds of characters. Players have come to assign colors to these decks. Remember that these terms only refer to the BASIC combat cards for each deck:

“Red Decks” are heavy on attack and weak on defense. These represent aggressive characters. Characters with Red Decks-

·        Darth Vader

·        Anakin Skywalker

·        Luke Skywalker

·        Darth Maul

“Blue Decks” are balanced, sturdy decks, representing well-rounded characters, able in both attack and defense. Characters with Blue Decks-

·        Obi-Wan Kenobi

·        Mace Windu

·        Count Dooku (Darth Tyranus)

“Green Decks” are reserved for the masters of the Force, not particularly aggressive, but deft in defense. Characters with Green Decks-

·        Yoda

·        Emperor Palpatine (Darth Sidious)

“Yellow Decks” (or Shooter Decks) represent non-Force wielding characters and the characters that use blasters and firearms when fighting. Characters with Yellow Decks-

·        Boba Fett

·        Jango Fett

The “Yellow+ Deck” was designed specifically for Han Solo, and contains one defense tweak.

Types of Minors:

In the same way the designers created “colors” for the major character combat cards, they the same as well for the minor characters. “Weak Minors” refer to the weakest minors, like Imperial Stormtroopers and Republic Clones. “Strong Minors” are close to Yellow Decks. Padme, Leia, and Greedo are Strong minors. There are also “Strong+” and “Strong++” minors. Chewbacca, Super Battle Droids and Royal guards fill this category.
